Who we are

8 Weeks for Families is a grassroots campaign by Irish families advocating for the extension of statutory paternity leave in Ireland. We are not affiliated with any political party.

What data we collect

When you sign our petition, we collect:

• Full name: to identify you as a signatory
• Email address: to verify your signature and, if opted in, send campaign updates
• County: to demonstrate geographic support across Ireland
• Personal message (optional): to understand why this matters to you
• Campaign updates preference: whether you wish to receive updates

Why we collect it (legal basis)

We process your data based on your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you give by signing the petition. For campaign updates, we rely on your explicit opt-in consent.

How we use your data

• To count and present the total number of petition signatures
• To present aggregate data (e.g., signatures per county) to government representatives
• To send campaign updates if you opted in

We will never sell your data, share individual details publicly, or pass your information to third parties for marketing purposes.

How we store your data

Your data is stored securely in an encrypted database. Access is restricted to campaign organisers only. We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information.

Data retention

We retain your petition signature data for the duration of the campaign. If the campaign concludes or you request deletion, your data will be permanently removed within 30 days.

Your rights under GDPR

As an EU/EEA resident, you have the right to:

• Access: request a copy of your personal data
• Rectification: correct any inaccurate data
• Erasure: request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten")
• Withdraw consent: at any time, without affecting prior processing
• Lodge a complaint: with the Data Protection Commission (DPC) at dataprotection.ie
